It’s all over for another year and the awards have been doled out. The German director Maren Ade arrived in the Cannes competition for the first time with Toni Erdmann – a rumour suggested she was set to unveil the film in the Un Certain Regard strand just one day before the official announcement – and she walks away with perhaps the most universally adored film of the new century.
But no awards. A travesty. Perhaps because the sun shone for the entire runtime of the festival and kept spirits high, this has rightly been deemed one of the stronger competition line-ups of recent times, so even without the bureaucratic business of the awards, this year’s festival will go down as a top vintage.
