Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal and John C Reilly star in the French director’s Oregon oater.

One of the big disappointments of this year’s Cannes Film Festival was the absence of renowned French filmmaker and previous Palme d’Or winner Jacques Audiard from the official selection. The word was that his hotly-anticipated eighth feature, The Sisters Brothers, wasn’t quite ready – but the arrival of this trailer would appear to put that rumour to bed.

In any case, this first look has got us even more pumped for the film’s release, which is currently scheduled for late 2018. Adapted from Canadian author Patrick DeWitt’s 2011 novel of the same name, it stars Joaquin Phoenix and John C Reilly as assassin siblings Eli and Charlie Sisters (‘Brothers by blood, Sisters by name’, as the tagline puts it) who are hired to kill a local prospector who has stolen from their employer. Jake Gyllenhaal, Rutger Hauer and Riz Ahmed complete the impressive cast list.

With the likes of A ProphetRust and Bone and Dheepan under his belt, Audiard looks to be charting new terrain with his first English-language feature; Gloria Jones’ soulful rendition of Tainted Love’ sets the tone for a comedy western set in Oregon during the late 19th century. Watch the trailer below and judge for yourself – and keep an ear out for Gyllenhaal’s British accent.
