Angela Schanelec’s The Dreamed Path is the German director’s first solo feature since 2010’s Orly. The film was much hyped in 2016 when it debuted on the festival circuit, although we’re still waiting on a UK release date to be announced.
Partly set in 1984, the film follows a young troubled German couple in Greece. Thirty years later, their paths cross with another tormented couple in Berlin. The unexpected events that follow raise questions about love, loneliness and cause and effect, set against the monolithic backdrop of EU politics.

Released ahead of its LA screening on 22 April, 2017, the trio of teasers reveal a glimpse into Schanelec’s desaturated, carefully composed world. Lead actors Thorbjörn Björnsson and Miriam Jakob appear to wander through the forest and encounter a drug deal, although the sequences are elliptical and elusive.
A key member of the first wave of the Berlin school movement, Schanelec is certainly a director to keep an eye on. Her film Places in Cities screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival.
The Dreamed Path looks likely to further her reputation as an intelligent, sensitive and formally innovative filmmaker. Check out two more teasers for the film below.
