Amma Asante’s Apartheid era period drama is set to open the 60th BFI London Film Festival.

Directed by Amma Asante (Belle) and written by Guy Hibbert (Eye in the Sky), A United Kingdom tells the true story of the contentious romance between Seretse Khama, King of Bechuanaland (modern Botswana), and a London office worker named Ruth Williams.

Selma star David Oyelowo and Gone Girl Rosamund Pike play the couple whose marriage in 1948 caused tension between the British and South African governments, not to mention their families (“Father will hate him; he’s cleverer than him and he’s black”), around the advent of Apartheid. The film will premiere at the 60th BFI London Film Festival, which kicks off on 5 October. Before then, check out the trailer and let us know your thoughts @LWLies.

A United Kingdom is released 25 November.
