Watch the brand new trail­er for Jean-Luc Godard’s The Image Book

The vet­er­an French auteur’s Cannes-win­ning lat­est arrives in cin­e­mas and on MUBI next month.

It’s kin­da strange to be extreme­ly excit­ed about a new trail­er for a Jean-Luc Godard film, but here we are. The Image Book is the sin­u­ous, play­ful­ly inscrutable and whol­ly orig­i­nal new work from the French icon, and it’s com­ing to a cin­e­ma near you on 2 Decem­ber before head­ing onto MUBI the fol­low­ing day, just in time to cel­e­brate the director’s birth­day – he’s 88 years young.

The film is yet anoth­er exam­ple of JLG’s pas­sion for adapt­ing and enhanc­ing the very gram­mar and syn­tax of cin­e­ma to prove that this is a medi­um remains very much in its infan­cy. He draws on hor­ror and poet­ry, lit­er­ary slo­ga­neer­ing and heart­felt con­fes­sion, emo­tion and con­fu­sion, all at the ser­vice of a work that needs to be ingest­ed and contemplated.
