“Mummy, I want a PlayStation. Mummy, I want you to kill that man.” British actress and screenwriter Alice Lowe endures the unusual demands of pregnancy in the trailer for her directorial debut Prevenge, a pitch-black comedy about a bloodthirsty foetus.
Lowe also writes and stars in the film as the pregnant Ruth, whose unborn child dictates her life decisions, guiding her on a murderous spree of unsuspecting victims which unfolds in gruesome and brutal hilarity. The premise is at once intriguing and horrifying but the result is one of the best British comedies we’ve seen in ages.

Lowe’s previous work includes co-writing and staring in Ben Wheatley’s 2012 film Sightseers and providing a key voice role in the Tom Hardy-led auto-thriller Locke, while she’s perhaps best known to UK audiences for cult shows such as Garth Merenghi’s Dark Place and Beehive. Prevenge, which also features Game of Thrones stars Kate Dickie and Gemma Whelan, is due in cinemas 10 February 10.
