Solo directorial debuts from established film stars tend to be greeted with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. Not so in the case of Greta Gerwig, as from the looks of things the Frances Ha and 20th Century Women actor has delivered a confident and substantial first feature behind the camera with Lady Bird.
Based on a semi-autobiographical script written by Gerwig, the film sees Saoirse Ronan play a headstrong young woman from northern California – the self-named “Lady Bird” of the title – who is on the cusp of adulthood and uncertain about what the futures holds for her.

We see her rowing with her parents (Laurie Metcalf and Tracy Letts), shooting the breeze with her best friend (Manchester by the Sea’s Lucas Hedges) and hooking up with a boy (Call Me by Your Name’s Timothée Chalamet), all while questioning what the best version of herself is.
Lady Bird is released on 10 November in the US, and February in the UK.
