The enigmatic director’s long-gestating passion project Voyage of Time finally has a release date.

After its notable absence from the 2016 Cannes lineup, Terrence Malick’s Voyage of Time is set for release on 7 October. The film has been nearly four decades in the making and looks to be epic in scope. According to an official synopsis, Voyage of Time is “a celebration of life and the grand history of the cosmos” from “the Big Bang to the dinosaur age to our present human world… and beyond.”

In 2014, producer Sophokles Tasioulis said of Malick’s creative process, “There is a vision of what Terrence Malick wants with this film. He has in a way collected colours and has an idea of what he wants to paint.” Though hailed as “the filmmaker’s first foray into documentary filmmaking,” Malick has relied on digital artists and employed other artistic reconstructions to bring the universe, past and present (and possibly future), to the screen. It has however been meticulously researched with help from advisers at MIT, Cambridge, and Harvard.

Voyage of Time will be released as two companion features: Voyage of Time: The IMAX Experience, a 40-minute version in IMAX narrated by Brad Pitt, and Voyage of Time: Life’s Journey, a 90-minute version narrated by Cate Blanchett, that will likely see a wider release. Legendary composer Ennio Morricone is rumoured to have scored the film. The composer last worked with Malick on the Academy Award nominated score for Days of Heaven.
