Considering Knight of Cups placed in the top five our our best films of 2016 round up, it’s safe to say that Terrence Malick’s next film is up there among our most anticipated of this year.
Previously titled Weightless, Song to Song is third feature-length project from the latterly prolific director to receive a theatrical release within the past 12 months. Filmed in 2011 back to back with Knight of Cups, the film centres on an A&R scout on the search for fresh talent in Austin’s legendary rock scene. Naturally, this is merely a backdrop for a drama concerning two intersecting love triangles.
Michael Fassbender stars as said music exec in an impressive that also includes Rooney Mara, Ryan Gosling, Cate Blanchett, Benicio Del Toro, Haley Bennett, Christian Bale and Natalie Portman – though as ever with Malick it’s unclear exactly who has made the final cut. At least we won’t have to wait too long to find out, with a report from Indiewire confirming that Song to Song will hit theatres in the US on 17 March.
No UK release has been announced yet, but we’re banking on the film turning up at the Berlin Film Festival next month. Keep an eye out for our first-look review then.
