Todd Haynes has chosen the winner of our Carol creative brief

The director picked his favourite Cate Blanchett portraits from your amazing entries.

Little White Lies

To celebrate the release of Todd Haynes’ masterful mid-century romance, Carol, in cinemas now, we asked our readers to submit a black-and-white illustrated portrait of star Cate Blanchett.

Haynes took time out from his busy schedule to judge your entries, asking us to relay the following message: “Thanks to everyone for so many lovely entries… It was not easy to pick!”

A full gallery of all your entries will be online later today. In the meantime, here are the winners with Todd’s accompanying comments:

Honorable mention

“Emmanuel Santos’ sharp and rich drawing (with the lovely stain treatment on the mink).”

Second runner up

“Ego Rodriguez’s fabulous ’30s style illustration.”

First runner up

“Freddy Fuller’s beautiful Carol portrait, which I think captures something elegant but gently naturalistic we tried to bring to the feel of the film itself.”

And the winner is…

“Katarina Kühl’s extremely original expressionistic portrait that forgoes glamour for something more revealing and emotionally exposed in the character of Carol.”

Congratulations to all the winners and a huge thanks to everyone who entered. We’ll be back with another creative brief in the New Year.
