The Meyerowitz Sto­ries (New and Select­ed) is the lat­est NY-set ensem­ble com­e­dy from the direc­tor of Frances Ha.

No, that isn’t some kind of crazy movie mirage – it is Adam San­dler opt­ing to put aside his gar­ish low­brow com­e­dy side project to star in some­thing a lit­tle bit more refined. And, as with his sub­lime career out­lier, Punch-Drunk Love, Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Sto­ries (New and Select­ed) gives him a plat­form to flex his act­ing mus­cles and prove to the world once more that he’s a damn fine per­former when he wants to be.

The film is a sort-of fol­low-up to Baumbach’s The Squid and the Whale, and it sees Dustin Hoff­man play­ing a over­bear­ing patri­arch whose art career nev­er took off. He sup­press­es his bit­ter­ness by tak­ing it out on his chil­dren from var­i­ous mar­riages: Dan­ny (San­dler), Matthew (Ben Stiller) and Jean (Eliz­a­beth Marvel).

The Meyerowitz Sto­ries drops on to Net­flix on 13 Octo­ber, but in the inter­im do take a look at this snazzy first trailer.
