The Great Wall gets a wondrous first trailer

Words by Oscar Rickett

Matt Damon defends mankind against mysterious forces in the most expensive Chinese movie of all time.

Hot on the heels of his long-awaited return as Jason Bourne, Matt Damon is climbing back into the action saddle for The Great Wall, a new historical epic from ace visionary Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers) – with an intriguing twist.

Set in 15th-century China, the film tells the story of a group of soldiers who, while searching for gunpowder, come across the iconic eponymous structure only to discover that true reasons for its construction. That’s right, there’s something far worse than savage Mongol warriors on the other side…

Looks beautiful, sounds a bit silly. But the fact that the film marks both the English-language debut of one of China’s greatest living directors and the largest ever Chinese production is enough to grab our attention. Give the trailer a watch above and let us know what you think @LWLies.

The Great Wall hits UK cinemas 24 February, 2017.
