The BFG gets a barnstorming new trailer

09 Dec 2015

Another Steven Spielberg film peeks over the horizon as Bridge of Spies can still be seen in the rear-view.

Spielberg fever is still in the process of dying down from the recent release of his ace Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies. So it looks like we might have to start cranking it back up again post haste, as Big Steve is back once more with a new, effects-driven take on Roald Dahl’s 1982 novel, The BFG’ – a story adored by children of all ages.

Casting news has been drip-fed through the news wires over the past 12 months, with Mark Rylance on voice detail as our giant-sized hero who, unlike his peers, doesn’t eat children, and newcomer Ruby Barnhill as his pint-sized young friend, Sophie. From this first trailer, it looks like the film is sitting in a space somewhere between the Harry Potter franchise and Martin Scorsese’s gorgeous film history lesson, Hugo.

One film it doesn’t at all resemble is Wes Anderson’s droll take on Dahl, Fantastic Mr Fox from 2009. It looks like a work aiming to connect with a mass audience. Take a peek at this first trailer if you will.

The BFG opens in cinemas on 22 July.
