And we allow them to do so as long as they never, ever decide to take on “real issues” or examine the harsh, dark realities of being human.
At LWLies HQ, we received a sharp collective shiver upon reading the news that director M Night Shyamalan has a new movie on the way, and that he’s using his wacky brand of twist-heavy high jinx to explore the life of a man with split personality disorder. Though we would never write off a film sight unseen, we do feel nervous at the prospect of a director like Shyamalan taking on such a delicate subject, particularly as the social media hounds are always ready to unleash their red-eyed outrage towards anyone and anything.

From this first trailer, Split looks to at least be technically accomplished – McAvoy plays a sociopath named Kevin who has within him 23 separate personalities. He captures a group of teenage girls and they must try and determine the reason for their incarceration. It looks like MNS has taken the cod psychoanalysis at the end of Hitchcock’s Psycho and stretched it into a feature length movie. And whatever the reason given for the girls’ capture, we’re certain it’s going to be profound and not a gimmick.
