Considering their sizeable contribution to the landscape of traditional animated storytelling, it’s pretty remarkable to think that Studio Ghibli had never produced an out-and-out kids’ show before 2014. Now rather excitingly, all 26 episodes of Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter are being imported for English-language audiences, having originally aired on Japanese television.
The series was directed by Goro Miyazaki (son of Hayao), who previously helmed the similarly family-oriented From Up on Poppy Hill and Tales of Earthsea. The story, about a young girl whose father is the chief of a tribe of bandits, is an adaptation of beloved Swedish children’s writer Astrid “Pippi Longstocking” Lindgren’s popular books of the same name.
