The animation studio’s latest is inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead.

Pixar’s upcoming feature Coco follows Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez), a 12-year-old boy who is obsessed with legendary Mexican guitarist Ernesto de la Cruz (Benjamin Bratt).

After touching Ernesto’s guitar, he is somehow transported to the Land of the Dead, an adventure leading to an extraordinary family reunion’, as the official synopsis has it.

This new effort from the acclaimed animation studio is inspired by Día de los Muertos, the Mexican Day of the Dead, as we see Miguel introduced to the wider universe of the afterlife. It looks as if there will spotlight Miguel’s own musical aspirations too, as a recording of his idol implores never underestimate the power of music.”

This first trailer hints at a fresh new direction for the studio, who have shown an increasing focus on producing sequels to their most successful properties (Cars 3 will also be released this year) in recent years.
