Watch the gloriously silly first trailer for Mindhorn

Words by John Wadsworth

Julian Barratt plays a washed-up TV actor in this brilliant new comedy.

In the 10 years since The Mighty Boosh’s television run ended, Julian Barratt has featured in an assortment of projects, from Ben Wheatley’s A Field in England and Steve Oram’s Aaaaaaaah!, to stage works by Chekhov and Gogol. Yet, despite Barratt’s evident versatility, his Boosh role as man of action” Howard Moon has proven difficult to shake.

Now, with Mindhorn, he has a new on-screen hero to be remembered by: Richard Thorncroft, a balding, bloated, washed-up TV actor who longs to relive his heyday as the protagonist of a hit 80s detective show.

When a killer terrorising the Isle of Man demands to speak to Bruce Mindhorn, unaware that he is a fictional character, Thorncroft sees an opportunity to return to the limelight.

A trailer for Mindhorn has just been released, and it has reminded us of why we loved the film first time around: the one-liners, the glorious 80s pastiches, the bionic eyepatch, Mindhorn’s ability to literally see truth” – it’s all in there.

The British-led cast includes Andrea Riseborough as a local cop investigating the case, Simon Farnaby (who also co-wrote the script) as an inexplicably shirtless Dutch stuntman, and Steve Coogan as the successful star of a long-running Mindhorn spin-off.

If this trailer leaves you craving more Mindhorn goodness, be sure to pick up a copy of our latest print edition.
