Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon play the warring Hollywood icons in this FX drama.

The bitter rift that opened between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford on the set of the 1962 movie Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? is the stuff of Hollywood legend. Now, director Ryan Murphy, the man behind last year’s trashy but endlessly compelling The People v OJ Simpson, has reignited interest in this very public spat with his aptly-titled new series, Feud.

The show, which is airs 5 March on FX, stars Jessica Lange as Crawford and Susan Sarandon in the role of Davis – a dream-casting scenario that looks to have paid off judging by this first official trailer. Although their rivalry was infamous at the time, known one really knows how Crawford and Davis really behaved towards one another once the cameras had stopped rolling. So it will be fun to see just how their mutual disdain plays out in what looks to be a feisty-looking period drama.

Perhaps more pertinently, however, Murphy has stated that his main intention was to explore the idea of being an ageing screen icon, both then and now.

Feud co-stars Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Stanley Tucci and Alfred Molina, making it one of the most impressively cast, not to mention thematically rich, TV events of 2017. Watch the trailer above and let us know your thoughts @LWLies
