Denzel Washington’s Fences get a powerful first trailer

28 Sep 2016

The actor steps behind the camera for this 1950s set race relations drama.

Fresh from his star turn in Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven, Denzel Washington is jumping from the saddle straight into the director’s seat for Fences – his first behind the lens since 2007’s The Great Debaters. Adapted from the 1983 play by August Wilson, it tells the story of an African-American couple struggling to keep their family unit together amid swirling racial tensions in 1950s Pittsburgh.

Washington and his co-star Viola Davis know their roles well, having each received a Tony award for their performances in the 2010 Broadway revival. From the looks of this first official trailer the transition from stage to screen has been a seamless one. And if nothing else, it proves that Washington is still the best in the business when it comes to delivering a spine-tingling monologue.

Fences is released 25 December 2016.
