Set in an unspecified future world during a fictitious dictatorship, The White King portrays a society decayed by an oppressive régime. Based on György Dragomán’s acclaimed novel, the film is pitched somewhere between George Orwell’s ‘1984’ meets JG Ballard’s ‘Empire of the Sun’, and boasts an impressive cast including Jonathan Pryce, Agyness Deyn and Olivia Williams alongside newcomer Lorenzo Allchurch.
Written and directed by Alex Helfrecht and Jörg Tittel, it tells the story of a young boy named Djata (Allchurch) whose father is held captive under the command of a totalitarian state. Exploited by the secret police and corrupt officials, Djata and his mother are forced to traverse a land overrun with greed, propaganda and vicious gangs.
