It’s a little over three years since Steven Soderbergh announced his plans to step back from feature filmmaking, and in that time, well, we’ve missed him. He’s not been entirely missing from our screens, of course – both seasons of The Knick are up there with the very best of TV from the past two years – but his absence from cinema has been keenly felt. Thankfully, Soderbergh has cut his sabbatical short for Logan Lucky, a heist comedy set in the fast-and-furious world of NASCAR that sees Channing Tatum and Adam Driver lead the grid from Daniel Craig, Katherine Waterston,Riley Keough and Hilary Swank.

Not much else has been revealed about the project, but courtesy of @bitchuation we do know that the 35-day shoot got underway on 24 August and, more excitingly still, Soderbergh appears to be using 16mm film stock. It also sees Rebecca Blunt receive her first screenwriting credit. Like the director’s last film, the made-for-TV Liberace bio Behind the Candelabra, this one hints at something lighter, and there’s every chance it could be a palate cleanser before the decidedly darker-looking Mosaic and an as-yet untitled Panama Papers feature which Soderbergh is reportedly in the frame to direct.
