Jake Gyl­len­haal is star­ring in Jacques Audiard’s next movie

He joins Joaquin Phoenix and John C Reil­ly in the director’s adap­ta­tion of noir west­ern The Sis­ters Brothers’.

It feels like an age ago that Jacques Audi­ard was col­lect­ing the Palme d’Or for his pow­er­ful immi­gra­tion dra­ma Dheep­an at the Cannes Film Fes­ti­val. Now the French direc­tor is look­ing to back that suc­cess up with the intrigu­ing­ly-titled The Sis­ters Broth­ers, which is based on Patrick DeWitt’s 2011 nov­el of the same name.

We already knew that Joaquin Phoenix and John C Reil­ly were on-board, but now it seems that Jake Gyl­len­haal as also been cast in this 1850s Ore­gon-set noir west­ern about two broth­ers who pur­sue a gold prospec­tor across 1000 miles of desert after the man steals some loot from their boss.

If the source nov­el is any­thing to go by, the film is like­ly to be dark­ly com­ic in tone, and could well end up hav­ing some­thing of a Coen broth­ers flavour to it.

Vari­ety reports that The Sis­ters Broth­ers is expect­ed to be Audiard’s first ful­ly Eng­lish-lan­guage project. No release date has been set, but giv­en its director’s track record we wouldn’t bet against this one debut­ing in Cannes next year.
