He joins Joaquin Phoenix and John C Reilly in the director’s adaptation of noir western The Sisters Brothers’.

It feels like an age ago that Jacques Audiard was collecting the Palme d’Or for his powerful immigration drama Dheepan at the Cannes Film Festival. Now the French director is looking to back that success up with the intriguingly-titled The Sisters Brothers, which is based on Patrick DeWitt’s 2011 novel of the same name.

We already knew that Joaquin Phoenix and John C Reilly were on-board, but now it seems that Jake Gyllenhaal as also been cast in this 1850s Oregon-set noir western about two brothers who pursue a gold prospector across 1000 miles of desert after the man steals some loot from their boss.

If the source novel is anything to go by, the film is likely to be darkly comic in tone, and could well end up having something of a Coen brothers flavour to it.

Variety reports that The Sisters Brothers is expected to be Audiard’s first fully English-language project. No release date has been set, but given its director’s track record we wouldn’t bet against this one debuting in Cannes next year.
