Bergman Island is inspired by the life of the legendary Swedish director.

Mia Hansen-Løve is taking on exciting new projects left right and centre. The French filmmaker’s two most recent features, Things to Come and Eden, were met with considerable critical acclaim.

Her next film will be hostage drama Maya, starring Romain Kolinka as a reporter heading to India after being held hostage in Syria. Despite its imminent release, Hansen-Løve is already lining up its follow-up, Bergman Island.

The film is set on the island of Fårö, home to the late Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. It centres on an American filmmaking couple who retreat to the island for the summer to write screenplays in an act of pilgrimage to the place that inspired their directorial idol.

As the summer and their screenplays progress, the lines between reality and fiction begin to blur against the backdrop of the island’s wild landscape. In an interview with the Guardian in 2016, it was implied that the film might be inspired by Hansen-Løve’s relationship with fellow French filmmaker Olivier Assayas.

Although Greta Gerwig, Mia Wasikowska and John Turturro are attached to the project, there is no word yet on the parts they’ll be playing. Bergman Island will start shooting in the summer of 2018, to coincide with the centenary of Bergman’s birth on 14 July, 2018.
