Watch the epic trailer for Masaki Kobayashi’s The Human Condition trilogy

08 Sep 2016

Words by Oscar Rickett

The director’s bold and bleak cinematic vision chronicles life in World War Two-era Japan.

Long may Arrow Films’ ongoing commitment to releasing epic, multi-disc, difficult” Japanese-language epics continue apace. In 2015 they dropped the long lost Love + Anarchism box set on an unsuspecting public, and since then have released a Stray Cat Rock collection and announced a gigantic Battles Without Honour and Humanity Blu-ray set, which is en route for late 2016.

Also on the docket is a plush, BR release of Masaki Kobayashi’s The Human Condition trilogy, chronicling the relentless struggles of life in World War Two-era Japan. A dizzying epic of social and political upheaval and its effect on the individual, this stunning new trailer offers a small taster of the director’s lacerating cinematic vision.

The Human Condition trilogy is released on 19 September 2016.
