The director of Carol returns with a typically gorgeous looking fantasy drama.

Todd Haynes films have been few and far between of late. When they do arrive, however, they rarely disappoint. Following up Carol and I’m Not There, the American director is returning this year with Wonderstruck, for which a spellbinding first trailer has just been released.

Adapted from Brian Selznick’s 2011 novel of the same name, the film follows two children from different times. Uncovering peculiar mysteries, it sees the lives of Rose (Millicent Simmonds), a young girl in 1927, and Ben (Oakes Fegley), a young boy in 1977, unfold in beautiful, mesmerising symmetry. You can read more about the film in our first-look review from the Cannes Film Festival.

Arriving with a healthy dose of nostalgia courtesy of David Bowie’s Space Oddity’, this trailer promises more of Haynes’ trademark emotional precision, though as a child-friendly drama the film looks to be an altogether different prospect from his most recent features.

With a supporting cast including Haynes’ regular Julianne Moore alongside Cory Michael Smith and Michelle Williams, and with a script by Selznick himself, Wonderstruck is set to be another impressive outing from this illustrious filmmaker.

Wonderstruck is released on 20 October, 2017.
