News of a forthcoming reboot has got us thinking of who should take the reins of the saga.

There’s an R‑rated Hellboy reboot in the works according to Mike Mignola, who created the original comics back in 1993 – but who should to take the reins of the cult antihero’s latest big screen outing?

Guillermo del Toro first brought Hellboy to the big screen in 2004 with a live-action film he co-wrote and directed. Hellboy II: The Golden Army was released in 2008, and saw del Toro and star Ron Perlman reteam for the series’ second instalment.

But in February 2017, to the disappointment of Hellboy fans everywhere, del Toro announced that there was a 100 per cent chance that Hellboy 3 would never happen.” In a surprising turn of events, however, Mignola has tweeted that the franchise is indeed being revived – without del Toro.

The film, which has a working title of Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen, will be written by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden and Mignola.

David Harbour, who became a household name in 2016 as Jim Hopper in Netflix’s Stranger Things, has been cast in the lead role, replacing Perlman, while Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones), is rumoured to be in talks to director.

As we’re not entirely convinced by the latter choice, here’s a gallery of directors we think would be a perfect fit for the Hellboy reboot…

A middle-aged man with a beard and glasses holds a gun in a dark setting.
Man with glasses holding a large grotesque-looking dragon statue in a dark, eclectic room with various decorative objects.
Man in black coat holding vintage camera, looking at it intently.
Pensive man in glasses, contemplating in front of technical illustration.
A man in a suit embracing a large, lifelike animatronic creature with scaly, reptilian features.
Two musicians, a man and a woman, posing together and smiling. The woman has long dark hair and is wearing a studded black outfit, while the man has a beard and is wearing glasses.
