The director picked his favourite Cate Blanchett portraits from your amazing entries.

To celebrate the release of Todd Haynes’ masterful mid-century romance, Carol, in cinemas now, we asked our readers to submit a black-and-white illustrated portrait of star Cate Blanchett.

Haynes took time out from his busy schedule to judge your entries, asking us to relay the following message: Thanks to everyone for so many lovely entries… It was not easy to pick!”

A full gallery of all your entries will be online later today. In the meantime, here are the winners with Todd’s accompanying comments:

Emmanuel Santos’ sharp and rich drawing (with the lovely stain treatment on the mink).”

Ego Rodriguez’s fabulous 30s style illustration.”

Freddy Fuller’s beautiful Carol portrait, which I think captures something elegant but gently naturalistic we tried to bring to the feel of the film itself.”

Katarina Kühl’s extremely original expressionistic portrait that forgoes glamour for something more revealing and emotionally exposed in the character of Carol.”

Congratulations to all the winners and a huge thanks to everyone who entered. We’ll be back with another creative brief in the New Year.
