Take part in our creative brief as inspired by Todd Haynes’ romantic masterpiece.

Todd Haynes’ Carol is an expression of love. It’s about two people defining their feelings about one another, but as a film, it’s a romantic gift to audiences from its creator. Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara play star-crossed lovers whose eyes lock across a department store shop floor and spend the remainder of the film untangling the complex emotions they feel for one another.

To celebrate the cinema release of Carol on Friday 27 November, we’ve come up with a new creative brief in partnership with StudioCanal.

Two women and a man seated at a table, engaged in conversation. The women appear to be discussing something intently, with one woman's hand raised to her face in a pensive gesture. The setting is a cosy, old-fashioned room with floral wallpaper in the background.

We want you to send us a black-and-white sketch of Cate Blanchett as Carol in any style and using any medium of your choosing – it could be a pencil drawing that resembles a vintage photograph or a felt-tip portrait inspired by an advertisement display in a 1950s department store.

The winner will be announced on Monday 30 November. The prize is an official Carol poster signed by Todd Haynes, a framed print of the winning artwork, a copy of Patricia Highsmith’s book on which the film is based, a physical copy of the film’s soundtrack as scored by Carter Burwell, plus a year’s subscription to Little White Lies.

Email your entry to us under the subject line ‘Carol creative brief’ at competitions@tcolondon.com before 12pm GMT on Friday 27 November. Please remember to include your full name so we know who to credit. You can also send us your entry via Twitter or Instagram by tagging @LWLies, but please be sure to email us your entry as well.

Official Synopsis: Starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara and set against the glamorous backdrop of 1950s New York, Carol is an achingly beautiful depiction of love against the odds. From the author of The Talented Mr Ripley and acclaimed director Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven, I’m Not There, Mildred Pierce) comes a powerful drama about a married woman who risks everything when she embarks on a romance with a younger department store worker.

Carol is released in cinemas 27 November. Follow Carol on TwitterFacebook and Instagram.
