Meet the veteran producer of a Nicolas Roeg masterpiece

07 Apr 2014

Jeremy Thomas invites us to rummage around his trinket-littered office.

Unless notorious – like Harvey Weinstein – producers tend to be among the unsung members of a film’s creation. But even if you don’t know the name Jeremy Thomas, you will know his films. The 64-year-old Brit, founder of the Recorded Picture Company, has been a big wheel on the indie film scene for nearly 40 years.

He’s worked with Bernardo Bertolucci on The Dreamers, The Last Emperor and Little Buddha, with Nicolas Roeg on his darkly erotic masterpiece, Bad Timing, and with David Cronenberg on Crash and Naked Lunch. He produced man-of-the-moment Jonathan Glazer’s Sexy Beast and more recently Jim Jarmusch’s lush and deadpan vampire love story, Only Lovers Left Alive.

The BFI recently recognised his achievements with a Made in Britain: Jeremy Thomas season that is well worth exploring. To mark this we popped round to his characterful London digs and were treated to a brief but heady tour of his life in movies through props. Dennis Hopper, his cinematic lineage and one of the most famous whips in movie history all feature below.
