You couldn’t make it up… One of London’s most beloved cinemas and a landmark of alternative film culture in the capital for nearly half a century is being threatened with closure by a cadre of vile land developers who sleep on giant mounds of blood-stained dollar bills and quite possibly feast only on live kittens. The Curzon Soho on Shaftsbury Avenue is that cinema, and it’s a venue that movie-lovers from London, the UK and likely the entire globe will possess a cherished memory of their bygone cinematic epiphanies.
Like life intersecting with art, the Curzon team have decided to fight fire with fire. Or, to fight bulldozers and wrecking balls with invective that would make a sailor blush. Below is a campaign video they’ve produced, starring various members of the Soho’s staff, f’ing and jeffing for all they’re worth, spitting blue language as a way to stave off this awful, opportunistic land grab which is set to turn a beloved square mile into a commercialised concrete jungle.
