Cecil Beaton’s stun­ning behind-the-scenes por­traits are being exhib­it­ed by Sotheby’s.

To have been a fly on the wall of the 1970 Lon­don-set exper­i­men­tal gang­ster film Per­for­mance, direct­ed by Nico­las Roeg and Don­ald Cam­mell. In it James Fox plays a prop­er naughty cock­ney geezer who’s forced to lay low in Hol­land Park and ends up bunk­ing with an androge­nous lib­er­tine played by Mick Jag­ger. Slow­ly but sure­ly their per­son­al­i­ties begin to merge and through the mag­ic of edit­ing, they exchange personas.

Luck­i­ly for us, the pho­tog­ra­ph­er and Oscar-win­ning design­er Cecil Beat­on was on hand to take snaps on the set of Per­fo­mance, which are going to be pre­sent­ed at Sotheby’s S|2 gallery in Lon­don. The exhi­bi­tion is Sotheby’s first ded­i­cat­ed sale of Beaton’s pho­tographs and fif­teen images will be on offer as lim­it­ed edi­tion mod­ern plat­inum prints pro­duced from the orig­i­nal neg­a­tives. The show is open to the pub­lic from 25 Novem­ber until 23 Decem­ber. Full details for the show can be found here.
