Spanish maestro Pedro Almodóvar appears to have returned from a recent digression into genre filmmaking that resulted in a gothic horror (The Skin I Live In) and a camp comedy (I’m So Excited). The place he has returned to will certainly please his legions of fans, and that place is The Pedro Almodóvar movie – lilting, un-ironic, sincere melodrama that draws on the traditions of classic Hollywood “women’s pictures” from the 1950s.
Per this first trailer for Julieta (née Silencio), he looks to be heading right back to the period during which he produced some of his greatest works – between 1999’s All About My Mother and 2006’s Volver. The film is released in Spain on 8 April, but expect it to be lavished on to the English-speaking world at a certain French film festival come mid-May.
Julieta is released in cinemas August 2016.
