A restored 4k print of this classic Japanese war movie is coming to cinemas this April.

Often considered one of the great screen adaptations of a Shakespeare play in the history of cinema, Akira Kurosawa’s Ran is returning to screens both big and small this April in a brand spanking new 4K restoration.

Taking on the family meltdown at the core of King Lear’, in which an ageing father is met by violent defiance by his ungrateful and greedy sons, the film offers a new and innovative spin on this deceptively simple masterwork of dark, classical drama. Although it’s often best remembered for its incredible, visceral climactic battle sequence, it also is one of the great examples of expressionist colour usage in film, with the grim swatches of blood red pasted on the plush green landscape.

Take a gander at this amazing trailer to get an idea of how the eye-popping new print looks.

Ran is back in UK cinemas on Friday 1 April and will be available on DVD and Blu-ray from 2 May.
